Final Design

Beneath the Surface_Ten Sze Ching_Task 3

This design explores the idea of “don’t judge a book by its cover.” On the surface, the island appears small and simple, with only a single tree growing on top. However, beneath the water lies a much richer and more vibrant world filled with tree roots, colourful corals, and marine life. This contrast between the quiet surface and the lively underwater environment symbolises how true value and beauty are often hidden beneath what we first see. The tree represents the outward appearance, while the roots extending into the ocean reveal the deeper strength, richness, and life that exist internally.

Several design principles were applied to communicate this idea effectively. Contrast is used between the calm, minimal space above the water and the colourful, dynamic environment below. The glowing light and swirling water around the island core create emphasis, drawing the viewer’s attention to the centre where the hidden richness is revealed. The underwater colours also contrast with the softer tones of the sky, reinforcing the idea of discovery beneath the surface.

In addition, Gestalt principles, particularly figure-ground and continuity, help guide the viewer’s eye from the tree above to the roots and the vibrant underwater world below. This visual flow connects the two environments, creating a unified composition that highlights the relationship between surface appearance and inner depth.

Final Reflection

What have I learnt in this module?

In this module, I learnt the importance of design principles and how they form the foundation of every visual work. As a design student, I realised that I had previously focused more on technical execution rather than understanding the core principles behind design. This module brought me back to the fundamentals, contrast, balance, emphasis, unity, and more and helped me see how these principles shape meaning and structure in any artwork.

What did I enjoy the most?

I enjoyed the analysis process the most. Before this module, I never truly considered how many design principles are intentionally applied in a single artwork. Through analysing different designs, I discovered that even small visual elements work together carefully to create something impactful and beautiful. It changed the way I look at design and I now observe more deeply instead of just appreciating it on the surface.

What did I not enjoy the most?

One of the aspects I did not enjoy the most was the challenge of improving my drawing and painting skills during the process. At times, I struggled with how to further enhance the visual quality of my artwork, especially when refining details, shading, and colour application. Because of this, I sometimes spent a long time experimenting and adjusting different elements before I felt satisfied with the result.

What have I learnt about myself through this module?

I learnt that I am capable of thinking more critically about design rather than relying only on visual instinct. I now understand that good design is not just about aesthetics, there is structure, reasoning, and theory behind every strong visual outcome. This awareness has helped me approach design work more thoughtfully and intentionally.

What has changed and what has not in my learning journey?

What has changed is my design thinking process. I am now more conscious about applying principles intentionally rather than unconsciously. My growth feels gradual rather than sudden, but I can see clear improvement in how I analyse and create. What has not changed is my passion for design. I still enjoy creating visually engaging work, but now with deeper understanding.

What are my aspirations?

My aspiration is to continue creating beautiful and meaningful designs that are supported by strong theory and principles. I want my future work to not only look visually appealing, but also communicate clearly and thoughtfully through well-applied design fundamentals.
