Lighting Interactive Design - Final Assignment
Lighting Interactive Design - Final Assignment
The aim of this assignment is to create the video content for our projection mapping based on our conceptual idea. Before starting, I was completely unsure of how to approach this task. To prepare, I explored various effects available in CapCut, as it is a user-friendly video editing tool with many resources and effects we can utilize in our content, such as flickering, glitching, shaking, and more. After exploring these features, I felt more confident and began working on the illustrations for our projection content. Additionally, my groupmates and I held a short meeting to discuss the first phase of task delegation.
First Phase of Task Delegation:
- Sze Ching (Me): Draw illustration for scene 3, 4, 5 and messy lines layering
- Yeye: Draw illustration for scene 2, 6
- Crystal: Create clips for scene before and after show, research on bully cases in Malaysia
- Riona: Create sound design (source all sound effect and make an audio sample)
Some Illustrations I created before consultation:
Pulsive red nerves
Red messy lines
White messy lines
Hands chocking you
Hands dragging you
Consultation (9/3/2025)
Mr. Sharkir joined this consultation to provide feedback on our projection mapping content and share technical skills for creating it. While explaining our idea to him, I felt a bit nervous when speaking, and I hope to overcome this nervousness before our presentation. However, I’m really glad that he loved our idea and is looking forward to seeing the final outcome of our content!
Feedback
- Before show start: The warning and seating guidance is a good idea. It can be better by adding caution symbol to the warning, and add wording and glowing effect on the seating guidance.
- Scene 1: Using distort effect in in AE to make distorting wording, need to consider the scale, make the words smaller, draw the messy lines on the edge between wall and floor.
- Scene 2: Use masking to create the opening eye transition, the silhouette of the bullies can be smaller and more on the wall, using wiggle effect to make the silhouette floating.
- Scene 3: Place the hands on the wall only, use puppet tool to animate the fingers, use fade in to animate the pulsive red nerves, instead of animate line by line.
- Scene 4: Make layer for each hands, play with scale, opacity, use puppet tool to animate the grabbing effect of hands (point one on wrist and one on palm).
- Scene 5: Make the elements smaller, and download glitch sources to make glitching effect.
- Scene 6: Use more contrast, avoid using too much grey
- The end: Narrow down the facts to only Malaysia, the news can be on the entire screen in lower opacity.
Afterward, we continued with our task execution. On my side, I tested the assets I had drawn by editing them in CapCut first. Surprisingly, the effects looked quite nice when layering different assets and effects while adjusting keyframes, filters, and opacity. Below are some samples:
Scene 3: Physical assault
Scene 5: Flashbacks
Consultation (17/3/2025)
Sadly, this was our second and final consultation with Mr. Sharkir. However, we managed to receive valuable comments and tips from him on creating the animation for our projection mapping content. I'm glad that he is actually looking forward to our final product!
Feedback
- The scale of the wall = two human height
- Highlight text for the last scene to emphasize the number of victims
- The newspaper in the last scene can be consistent in filtering them to black and white colour
- The "stop bullying" can be in sketchy text
- In scene 2, the bullies' face on the floor can look towards the audience. Can try wiggle effect with time posterize to make stomp motion effect in Adobe After Effects.
- Browse from Pixabay and Envato to get sketch/noise texture for layering
After receiving his valuable feedback, I experimented with the wiggle effect for the bully's face. However, instead of using Adobe After Effects which would take time to learn, I applied the same concept in CapCut. I then added messy lines on the eyes and mouth to enhance the creepy effect. This is the outcome I achieved. P.S.: The illustrations were drawn by Yeye, and the moving eyeball was animated by Riona.
Scene 2: First-person perspective of school bullying
Afterwards, I looked back at the flashback I had made previously and felt that there was no rhythm or sequence—it all seemed quite messy. So, while refining the illustration for this scene, I thought of starting with a very scattered arrangement and then organizing it rhythmically to make it visually appealing, rather than mixing everything without logic. Therefore, I played around with the stomp motion of the elements and effect layering to make it more appealing.
Scene 5: After refinement
Then, I also worked on the eye-opening scene in the hospital. I refined the hospital scene I had drawn earlier, making it less greyish. For this scene, I created the eye transition by masking it with an eye-shaped overlay. I also added keyframes for the eye's motion and the brightness of the hospital scene. To make it more realistic, I applied a blur effect to the vision when the eyes first open.
Scene 6: Open Ending
Last but not least is the first scene, where Crystal created the text distortion effect in Adobe After Effects. I then added the messy lines I had drawn and applied some effects in CapCut, successfully creating a simple first scene.
Scene 1: Mental Turmoil
After receiving the audio clip from Riona, I tried compositing all the video clips and audio together to see the final result. The visuals and sound worked quite well, and we were all satisfied with the outcome. To be honest, before adding the sound effects, I was worried that the sudden scene changes would feel abrupt. However, after incorporating the audio, we found that everything synced well, and some jump scares were effectively created due to the sudden changes.
Final Composition
Below are some examples of my working panel in CapCut:

Overall Task Delegation
- Sze Ching (Me): Illustration for Scene 1, 3, 4, 5, 6. Layering effects and filters for Scene 1, Wiggle animation for Scene 2, Blood vessels pulse animation for Scene 3, Dizziness effect for Scene 4, Entire animation for Scene 5, 6, Final composition and adjustment.
- Crystal: Hands animation in Scene 3, 4, Text distortion animation for Scene 2, Entire warning scene before show starts, Entire real case scene after show.
- Riona: Eye animation in Scene 2, Entire sound design.
- Yeye: Illustration for Scene 2
Limitation and Solution
Time constraints were our main limitation. Since we only had seven weeks due to the short semester, we had to conduct research, analyze case studies, create storyboards, and animate the content within a tight schedule. To overcome this challenge, we delegated tasks and set a timeline to ensure every member could complete their work on time. Although, in the end, the task delegation was somewhat unbalanced, probably with me doing more than others, as long as we managed to finish the project, it wasn’t a major issue. We also prioritized completeness over refinement, but fortunately, the final result turned out quite well! Another limitation was our lack of experience with Adobe After Effects, which required extra time for us to explore its functions. To address this, we turned to CapCut, a tool we were already familiar with. Since CapCut offers built-in effects and filters suitable for our theme, such as glitching and flickering, it helped streamline our workflow. We used Adobe After Effects mainly for animating elements like the choking hands, grabbing hands, and distorted words—Crystal did a great job here! And then imported them into CapCut. With guidance from our lecturer and online tutorials, we managed to complete the animation successfully in After Effects.
Reflection
As a reflection, I learned a lot in this module, mainly about content ideation and creation. Although I feel a bit disappointed that we didn’t dive deeper into projection mapping software and hands-on learning, the process of working in a group, developing a solid concept with valid case studies and reasoning, brought me great satisfaction. Completing the content creation within just two weeks was absolutely insane, as we started everything from scratch. I am very grateful that our projection content will be published publicly for three weeks, allowing us to achieve our objective of breaking the silence on school bullying. Nonetheless, it was a tiring yet successful experience for me. However, it would have been even better if we had the opportunity to learn more about the Resolume Arena software as a wrap-up for projection mapping!
