Lighting Interactive Design - Assignment 1
In this assignment, we were required to develop a concept proposal supported by case studies and research, inspired by the theme "Pulse". This assignment involved creating a mind map for ideation, analysing case studies, extracting design inspiration, and applying it to our conceptual development.
Before our first consultation, we brainstormed various ideas related to the theme "Pulse," as it can be connected to many aspects of our surroundings. We used Miro to compile our inspirations and brief storylines for our projection mapping concepts. Below are our initial ideas for the content: a ballerina dancing on piano tiles, chasing by a serial killer, school bullying, internet adventure, and life in a hospital.

In our first consultation, we shared all our ideas for the projection mapping content, explaining each one in detail. Among all the concepts, the idea of school bullying was preferred by our lecturer as it raises educational awareness for the audience. We were also glad that this idea was chosen, as we preferred this topic as well. It is actually an extension of the "chased by a serial killer" concept, which brings intense fear in the audience while also incorporating an educational message.
Feedback
- School bullying is a good concept
- The ending can be good or open ending, instead of bad ending
- Combining with sound effect that fits with the visual
- Find projection concept that similar to our content for case study
After receiving his decision on the content selection, we immediately conducted research on similar visuals and projection mapping concepts that have been exhibited worldwide. Since our projection mapping aesthetic is more towards horror, primarily using red, black, and white lines, we decided to conduct a case study on the Junji Ito Horror Exhibition, which aligns with our design concept, and the Thin Air Exhibition, which provides inspiration on how to utilize light and sound to create an immersive experience.

Apart from that, we also discussed the storyline of our projection mapping content, including the visuals, sound, and the meaning of the story. We kept emphasizing the "pulse" theme by integrating elements such as heartbeats, breathing, nerves, and glitch effects into both the visuals and sound. At the same time, we were also concerned about whether our content might digress from the "pulse" theme.
Consultation 2 (17/2/2025)
In this consultation, we presented our mindmap, two of our case study analyses and briefly explained our storyline. Our lecturer required us to do more research on school bullying case studies, as this is the main content of our projection mapping, and it is not convincing to create content about school bullying without any research and evidence. This is definitely a valid concern, and we had actually done some research on school bullying before. After the consultation, we conducted more case studies on real cases and documentation of school bullying, as well as film analyses of movies related to school bullying.
Feedback
- Make different mindmap before and after case study of bullying
- Combining our idea and case study into one mindmap
- Conduct more research on school bullying, for example, school bullying exhibition, movie and etc.
- Conduct research on what victim experience in school bullying, how their feeling, and what consequences of school bullying towards them.
- Identify the victims of school bullying physically, mentally and emotionally.
- Add a conclusion for our assignment 1 report.
- Think of how our projection mapping content can interact with audience apart from visual and sound.
After this consultation, we did more research on school bullying and delegated the tasks so that everyone was in charge of a specific aspect of the research. From the case studies we conducted on art exhibitions and school bullying, we extracted key takeaways and implemented these design inspirations into our concept proposal. Below is the additional case study analysis we have done:
- Case of Zulfarhan Osman Zulkarnain
- Bully documentation
- Movie: A Place Called Silence
- Movie: Hang Gong Ju
These two consultations have given us valuable insights and support in our ideation and conceptual development. Therefore, this is our final report for Assignment 1.
Reflection
Throughout this assignment, I have learned how to develop a valid and convincing concept proposal, especially when our content involves real-world cases. Case study analysis is crucial as it provides valuable insights. For example, without researching art exhibitions like Junji Ito and Thin Air, I would never have realized the many design strategies considered to maximize the immersive experience for the audience. The design strategies applied in these exhibitions gave us different perspectives and great inspiration for our projection mapping content. Additionally, researching case studies on school bullying helped us gain a deeper understanding of the issue, including its various forms and the psychological impact on victims. Furthermore, I also learned a lot from working in a group, such as supporting each other with tasks, being brave enough to speak out and share opinions, proactively taking on additional tasks to help the team, and keeping track of everyone’s timeline to ensure smooth progress without delays. In conclusion, I am grateful to have collaborative group members, and the case studies we conducted have been highly beneficial for our next assignment.
