Week 4 (13/05/2024)

This week, we are preparing for our Spatial Design Assignment 1. This assignment involves researching a successful inclusive design project to understand what inclusive design is and what strategies are used to overcome design challenges. Since our next assignment is related to our healing center project, we decided to focus on a successful healing center project to gain valuable insights and prior for our upcoming work. 🦐

Figure 4.1 Inclusive design

We had several meetings and discussions about which healing center we should research, considering different countries, cultures, and target audiences. Here are some healing centers that have been shortlisted:

  • HillsidesCares
  • Forensic Psychiatric Clinic of Stockholm
  • Red Fish Healing Centre
  • Vejle Psychiatric Hospital
  • Clinic Les Alpes
  • Pranic Hospital Malaysia
  • PROMIS
  • Eve Centre
  • Hara Hospital
  • Geriamedical

After comparing all these healing centers, we found that HillsidesCares is the most informative and inclusive healing center project for children and adolescents. Therefore, we divided our tasks and conducted in-depth research on HillsidesCares, focusing on its services, facilities, space, environment design, and features. In conclusion, we identified four main design challenges faced by HillsidesCares: catering to different patients, designing a welcoming space, promoting privacy and confidentiality, and encouraging a sense of community. HillsidesCares strategically solves these problems with thoughtful and inclusive strategies. More information about this research will be submitted in Google Classroom!

From the research, I have gained a deeper understanding of mental health patients, a group I was not familiar with before, and learned about the types of inclusive design that can meet their needs and embrace patients from diverse backgrounds. Inclusive design is not only intended for mental health patients or those with other disabilities but also for ensuring that every user has access, regardless of their background. As an interactive spatial design student, our task is not only to design but also to analyse users' needs based on the features and environments, creating an optimal design that can embrace everyone. Therefore, this assignment has given me greater confidence to tackle our upcoming challenges in future assignments. πŸ’Š

Week 5 (20/05/2024)

Today's class agenda includes our presentation for assignment 1. At the beginning of class, we were given paper cups to doodle on for exhibition purposes. The cups will be exhibited at Fahrenheit88 next month. I can't wait to see our masterpieces on display there!

Figure 5.1 Doodles

The doodle is meant to express our feelings. Since I am one of the presenters, I feel nervous and want to escape from it. That's why I drew these sad faces. However, it turned out nice too. πŸ₯°

In today's lecture, we learned about the evolution of inclusive design. Since our next assignment is a big project, which involves creating a proposal for a healing center for Hospital Permai in Johor, we were given a lecture on what inclusive design is and how to make it accessible to everyone. While many designers nowadays create fabulous designs, they often don't focus on inclusivity. Therefore, our goal is not only to create great designs but also to ensure they are inclusive and accessible for everyone, including people with disabilities.

Today's presentation didn't go well for me since I'm not a naturally good speaker. 😐 Thinking about pitching our proposal to the top executives of the hospital makes me even more nervous. Therefore, I should put more effort into improving my public speaking skills and try to overcome my phobia. However, I am glad that our lecturer praised the topic we chose, HillsidesCares, and gave us valuable insights on what we should do for our upcoming assignment.

Week 6 (27/05/2024)

This week, we are honored to have a meeting with our client, Dr. Marina, for our Healing Center project, which is also our second phase of the assignment. This is a great opportunity to work on an industrial-based assignment, as we are actually engaged in an industrial project about the Healing Center. During this meeting, we were informed about the needs and improvements that Dr. Marina wishes to make in the Healing Center. Understanding their user needs is crucial for us to meet their goals. Nonetheless, we gained a lot of valuable insights from Dr. Marina regarding the Healing Center for mental health patients! πŸ₯

In today's lecture, we were instructed to build a VR gallery to showcase our project. We used Artsteps to build our project gallery. Given that the free template available was plain and boring, we decided to use 3D modeling to create our gallery. Since our group name is Zen Garden, we decided to build an outdoor gallery in a garden. It's time to brush up on our 3D modeling skills! 🎨

Week 10 (24/06/2024)

In today's lecture, we learned about inclusivity, which plays an important role in our daily lives. Inclusivity aims to provide equal access, create welcoming spaces, and embrace individuals from diverse backgrounds. It is important because it fosters creativity and innovation, leads to better decision-making, creates a positive work environment, and strengthens communities. This is related to our current assignment, which requires us to create a space for a healing center. πŸ₯

During the lecture, we were instructed to brainstorm our spatial design ideas on the whiteboard. During the semester break, Crystal, Yan Ning, and I conducted research on spatial design, identifying our target users, the technology to implement, and the rooms needed in a healing center. After our discussion, we developed our initial space concept, and the floor plan is above. Additionally, it was quite sudden for me to pitch our idea in front of my classmates without any preparation. However, it was a good opportunity for me to think critically and practice my speaking skills. 😣

After a short pitch, we received valuable feedback on our floor plan from the lecturer. For example, we were advised to consider the actual size of the room areas, implement immersive spaces in the collaboration area, and replace standard doors with sliding doors. We are glad that overall our idea is good. Following this, we plan to research and brainstorm the details of the spatial design, such as the furniture, theme, colors, and more. 🐟

Week 11 (01/07/2024)

In today's lecture, we were supposed to pitch our spatial and application design to Professor Chong, the health director from Impact Lab. Unfortunately, she left early, so my group didn't get the chance to present our product to her. However, our presentation continued without her. 😭

Due to limited time, we weren't fully prepared, which resulted in our pitch lacking conviction and confidence. From this experience, I've learned that confidence is crucial when promoting our product. Unfortunately, not everyone including myself is a natural storyteller, so it takes a lot of courage and effort for me to improve my public speaking skills.

Additionally, our lecturer gave us general feedback, noting that our application design is too complex with too many features, and we need to simplify it to make the user interface easier to use. After class, we stayed back to delegate tasks, hoping to deliver our best work for the next consultation on Wednesday and receive valuable feedback.

Week 13 (15/07/2024)

Today, we received the assignment brief for Assignment 2 in our Spatial Design course. Assignment 2 and our final project are interconnected, as we are working on the same task, which is helping Hospital Permai create a holistic healing space for both mental health patients and psychiatrists. After several weeks, we have developed a mature idea, and the 3D model is already in progress. However, we are still unsure about our target audience, given that we have different rooms for different purposes. After consulting with Mr. Yusri, I realized that while the users of our healing space can be very diverse, only the target users will benefit most from it. This has given me a clearer understanding of the definition of target users.

Additionally, we were informed that our client pitch has been canceled. Although I am not a confident speaker, I am somewhat disappointed because this would have been an excellent opportunity to present to higher officials as a university student, which would be a significant milestone for me. However, this cancellation has given us more time to refine our project, allowing us to deliver a better outcome. πŸ™ŒπŸ»✨

Week 14 (22/07/2024)

This week, my groupmates and I had a meeting to discuss our final assignment. We decided to create an interesting video rather than a simple presentation video. Therefore, we planned to do some skits to better showcase what our app and space should be. After preparing the script, we immediately started our first shoot. Although we encountered some difficulties during the shooting, such as choosing the spot and angle, and controlling expressions, everything went smoothly.
